Were you thinking of having a new fence installed next spring? It turns out that the best time to do it is during the BER months – September, October, November, or December, depending on your location.

All told, autumn projects can be faster and more convenient for everyone. Here are seven reasons why fall is the best time to install a fence.

1. Preparing your property for winter

Cleaning gutters, repairing leaks, sealing decking, and chimney sweeping are on our fall maintenance to-do lists. Add new fencing to seasonal maintenance and get all of your home improvement handled before colder weather comes.

2. Less disturbance to plants

It’s more difficult to install a brand-new fence around spring and summer landscaping. Fewer plants and lower growth overall create better conditions for a fence project.

3. Easier digging

The soil in the fall is perfect for digging and setting posts. Hot weather dries the soil out and can be inconsistent in distribution and density.

Of course, very cold weather freezes the ground. Add moisture, and your backyard can be one hard, concrete-like mass by February.

4. Friendlier temperatures

In most parts of the country, fall temperatures are comfortable for crews. The job gets done safely and efficiently when extreme heat or cold aren’t slowing you down.

5. Convenient scheduling

Spring and summer are a contractor’s busiest seasons. Opting for a fall installation may shorten wait times. In fact, some contractors offer better pricing during slower times such as fall.

6. Fewer pests

Fence installation is always easier to navigate when there aren’t nests of critters, mosquitoes, and other animals and insects buzzing around.

7. May help wood settle

Some pros prefer putting up wood fences during the fall because the humidity is lower. This may allow the wood to settle in without the fluctuations and flaws that can come about from a wet, hot summer.

How cold is too cold to install a fence?

If your area has consistently been exposed to temperatures of 25°F or below, the ground might be too frozen to install a fence.

However, companies in certain areas in the northern U.S. are accustomed to installing fences in cold conditions. They’ll have the equipment and expertise to dig deep enough below the frost line. Once you have your fence installed, it will also be important to prepare your fence for winter

Do you landscape before or after installing a fence?

You can do fall landscaping before or after installing a fence, but we recommend removing fallen leaves and branches before the crew arrives. Cutting back growth and dormant plants can help clear the area for construction, too.

Tasks like mulching beds might be better left until after your new fence is in place.

Explore your fall fencing options

Even if you’re not ready for a whole new fence, fall is the best time to perform all essential maintenance and repairs to your perimeter. Tighten hardware, re-seal where necessary, replace broken panels and trim back overgrowth for a fence that can survive the winter.

And if you ever need help with repair or replacement, Top Rail Fences has the products, materials, and expertise your fence needs. Get a free estimate from a fencing pro near you today.
