Running a school or daycare in North Dallas means fencing is not optional. It is a licensing requirement, a safety obligation, and one of the first things inspectors look at when they walk your property. Getting it right from the start saves you from costly corrections later and gives parents the confidence they need to trust you with their kids every day.
Here is what North Dallas education facilities need to keep in mind.
Fence height requirements
In Texas, any outdoor activity space used by children under five years old requires a fence that is at least four feet high. For older children and school-age programs the requirements may vary depending on your licensing type and facility classification.
This is one of the first things we talk through with education facility clients because getting the height wrong affects the entire installation. We coordinate with your licensing requirements before anything goes in the ground.
Gate requirements and access control
Every fenced outdoor activity space at a childcare facility needs at least two exits. One of those exits is typically the entry into your building. The other needs to be a proper gate.
Gates at childcare facilities are required to be self-closing and self-latching, with hardware positioned above a child's reach. All staff must be able to operate the lock at all times, whether that means carrying a key or knowing a code. Licensing inspectors check this specifically and without warning.
We install self-closing, self-latching gate hardware as standard on every education facility project we handle.
Choosing the right material
Not every fence material is appropriate for a childcare environment. The wrong choice creates climbing opportunities, sharp edges, or gaps that small hands and feet can find before you do.
Vinyl is one of the safest choices for play areas. No splinters, no sharp edges, smooth surfaces throughout, and solid panel options that eliminate footholds entirely.
Chain link is widely used for school perimeters and athletic areas. If you go this route, mesh size matters. Openings need to be small enough that little feet cannot get a foothold, and all edges need to be properly finished with no exposed wire ends.
Ornamental metal works well for the front-facing sections of a campus where appearance matters. Just make sure bar spacing is narrow enough that small heads cannot get trapped between them.
We help facility operators select the right material for each section of the property, not just the perimeter as a whole.
Pool fencing if applicable
If your facility has any type of pool or water feature on the premises, a separate set of requirements applies. The barrier must be at least four feet high, impenetrable, and gated with self-closing, self-latching hardware positioned out of a child's reach. Having a fence in place does not reduce the supervision requirements for staff. Both are required.
