How to Clean a Vinyl Fence

Vinyl fences are notoriously low maintenance, but there is one task you must do at least annually – a thorough cleaning. Regularly cleaning a vinyl fence prevents stubborn buildup and keeps your property looking its best.

How to clean a vinyl fence, step by step

The simple steps below can help extend the life and beauty of any vinyl fence.

1. Gather materials and supplies

Here’s a list of what you’ll need for the cleaning process. You may need additional supplies for pre-wash maintenance, such as an edge trimmer and screwdriver.

  • Broom
  • Soft-bristle brush
  • Hose with spray nozzle attachment
  • Ladder (optional, for taller fences)
  • 1:1 ratio of white vinegar and water (optional)

Alternatively, you can use a pressure washer to clean vinyl. A washer that delivers between 800-1200 psi can be effective without damaging the fence. Always “patch test” by pressure washing a small, inconspicuous area first.

2. Prepare the fence and surrounding area

Now is as good a time as any to perform general maintenance, such as tightening the hardware and trimming overgrowth away from the fence. For more, see our vinyl fence maintenance tips.

Use a broom to dislodge any dried-on leaves, dirt, and cobwebs, sweeping from top to bottom.

Next, use the hose to rinse away any debris.

3. Wash and rinse

Mix a few tablespoons of mild soap in a gallon bucket of lukewarm water. Dip your brush in the soapy water and clean the fence in gentle sweeping motions.

PRO TIP: If you have a large fence and hand-scrubbing is inefficient, focus on brushing the visibly dirty areas. Invest in a soap tank attachment for hoses that quickly cleans hard-to-reach areas.

Rinse the entire fence in clean water, aiming from top to bottom so no suds remain.

4. Spot-treat stubborn areas

Use the vinegar and water mixture to attack mold, mildew, or other marks that soap and water didn’t address. Apply it to the area with a cloth or brush and let it sit for at least 15 minutes before washing and rinsing again.

PRO TIP: Plan to finish cleaning your vinyl fence when it’s not hot and sunny. Drying a vinyl fence in high heat and sun can lead to water spots.

How to clean a vinyl fence without killing grass

If you want to avoid killing the grass around a fence, use lower concentrations of dish soap and vinegar. If there are any plants you don’t want to be exposed to soap, drape a tarp or drop cloth over them during cleaning.

FAQ about cleaning vinyl fences

Will bleach damage my vinyl fence?

Yes, bleach can damage a vinyl fence. If all other cleaning methods fail, a small amount of heavily diluted bleach may be effective. However, bleach will discolor vinyl fences that aren’t white. It will also degrade the fence, making it brittle and prone to cracking with frequent use.

How often should you clean a vinyl fence?

Vinyl fences should be cleaned at least once a year. It may be best to clean them seasonally, especially if storms or high winds make them especially dirty or muddy.

How do you clean black marks off a vinyl fence?

If soap, vinegar, and brushing don’t remove black marks on a vinyl fence, try a melamine sponge. Many home improvement stores also sell cleaning products specially formulated for vinyl.
